I adore a busy city,
A tainted city.
Like Athens, one summer afternoon, when the 8pm news rules every tv.
And the smell of burnt incense dances through the air,
Like the Pentozali at a Greek summer fair.
Savage dogs bark from neighbourhoods away.
As Yiayia plates a family feast that's been cooking all day.
Athens in Summer, kids play in basketball courts somewhere distant.
Though, on this empty echoing block it makes them feel closer.
I love a chaotic city because that's how my brain functions most of the time.
I love a beaten up industrial city, ruins that beckon reflection on poetry and love and poetry again.
Cities with crime.
Athens in Summer, let the celebrations come to an end.
Before we know, the calendar will flip over and we'll do it all again.
Written on the last day of summer on the back balcony of my friend's house in Athens.
